Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, shocked everyone on Friday by announcing that he will be leaving the team at the end of the current campaign. Klopp, who took over the position in 2015 and brought back Liverpool’s dominance in European football, gave his choice as an explanation for his waning energy. Liverpool won the 2020 league title—their first in thirty years—and the 2019 Champions League championship under his leadership. With five points to lead in the Premier League right now, Klopp wants to end his career with a league championship.
According to Klopp, “I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time,” during an interview posted on the Liverpool website.
“I adore everything about this club—the players, the staff, the city, and our supporters—in addition to everything else. I adore everything. However, the fact that I am still going with this choice indicates to you how certain I am that it is the right one.
The fact is, I’m, how shall I put it, exhausted. Naturally, I have no issues at all right now. I have known for a while that I will eventually need to make an announcement, but for now, everything is perfect.
“I am aware that I am unable to perform the job repeatedly.”
According to Liverpool, assistant managers Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders are also departing the team concurrently. During his tenure, Klopp led Liverpool to not just the Premier League and Champions League crowns, but also the FA Cup, League Cup, Super Cup, Club World Cup, and Community Shield.
“In keeping with Juergen’s expressed wishes, we will save the comprehensive tributes for a more appropriate time but nevertheless, we would be remiss if we did not take this opportunity to reaffirm that his appointment remains one of the greatest blessings of our time as owners,” said Mike Gordon, president of Fenway Sports Group.
The amazing accomplishments of the years that have passed and the happiness that Juergen and his group have given to all of us supporters speak for themselves. We shall never take his great achievements for granted.
