In their struggle to salvage the first test against India, England reached 89 for one on Saturday after giving up a sizable lead on the third day of play at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
India took a 190-run advantage in the first inning after they were all out for 436 in less than an hour, losing their final three wickets for no runs.
Ben Duckett was spearheading the England comeback at the lunch break with an undefeated 38, while Ollie Pope was batting on 16 runs.
Prior to losing their final three wickets, India had increased their score by 15 runs over the previous night.
Joe Root, an English bowler who bowls part-time, was the most successful, with 4-79.
The off-spinner was denied a hat-trick by Mohammed Siraj but eventually removed Ravindra Jadeja (87) and Jasprit Bumrah with consecutive deliveries.
After making a 44-minute effective cameo, Axar Patel was the final Indian batsman to fall.
With Zak Crawley (31) and Duckett regularly using the sweep shot, both traditional and reverse, to neutralize the threats offered by the Indian spinners, England got off to a strong start in their second innings.
Crawley took a step out to knock Patel into the sightscreen. Despite his fast pace, he was unable to convert the start.
After the opener gave an edge to off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s skipper Rohit Sharma joyously grabbed the ball at the lone slip to eliminate Crawley.
